Favorite Thanksgiving Snack Recipe

Thanksgiving Snacks that you make year after year become traditions your family look forward to! Easy recipes make it possible to continue the tradition. Traditions are powerful. With small children, you only have to do something about twice for it to become a tradition! Here is a Thanksgiving Snack Recipe that is easy, and will quickly become a tradition in your family. There are many ways to use it, so it will help you be more organized to bless your family and friends over the holidays!

Carefully and Prayerfully Choose Traditions

I’ve been sharing with you some of our traditions, Thanksgiving Book Recommendations, and Thanksgiving Activities, that have really bonded us as a family and created wonderful memories. Activities and traditions that have built all of our character, as well! I hope you’ll try some of them, and let me know what your traditions are, too!

Thanksgiving Snacks Traditions

Some traditions are just plain fun. Do them because, well, you like doing them! Or, do them because you love making your family happy:) This snack recipe falls into that category. Our family has a tradition.  Every year, right before Thanksgiving, we make Chex Party Mix.  But we don’t call it that.  We call it Nuts-and-Bolts.  This is my favorite Thanksgiving snack recipe. I grew up with Nuts-and-Bolts as a Thanksgiving Snack.  So, my mom probably used the 1950’s version of this recipe, which you will find below.

Now, I make a Thanksgiving Snack using the newer recipe, (also below). But, I don’t just make one batch.  I’m a firm believer in “cook once, eat many times”!  I do the work, (and make the mess), once, and then enjoy the products of my labor over and over! So, every year, I make a quadruple batch of this Thanksgiving Snack, which may sound hard, but is actually quite simple, with the right tools. I believe in investing in the right tools to make your home run smoothly. To make things easy. That especially applies in the kitchen. Good tools can simplify everything you do! They make it enjoyable to spend time in the kitchen making food to bless people.

Two of the 26 cup Fix N Mix bowls will hold all of the quadruple batch of this Thanksgiving Snack, and you can put them in the freezer. They nest, so are easy to store, when not in use.Tupperware Thatsa Bowl is really a nice size for so many things: this Thanksgiving Snack and taking large salads to potlucks, and we use them for just making popcorn! What I like is that they last a really long time. They’re my most-used bowls. They also make a wonderful Bridal Shower Gift!

Snacks as Thanksgiving Traditions

When my children were growing up, every Thanksgiving I would be the one to bring the Nuts-n-Bolts to the Thanksgiving celebration at my family home, where I grew up. I loved that that was my role. Do you have a special recipe that you are known for? I love hearing, “You’re going to bring your _____, aren’t you?!”  It’s a great feeling knowing everyone is anticipating that you’re going to bring that particular food. That’s tradition. That’s also good organization! If you know what you’re going to make way ahead of time, there’s no decision-making! And, you can buy the ingredients ahead of time, when on sale, if they’re non-perishable. I do this for my potluck recipes, too.

Holiday Parties

This recipe is great when I need something to bring to an unexpected party over the Christmas holiday! Or to offer, when someone stops by, unexpectedly!

So, this can be “your” recipe, too, if you don’t have one! Everyone loves this snack, at Thanksgiving, especially.

The rest of our tradition at Thanksgiving, was that we would go to the farm the day after Thanksgiving and spend the weekend, relaxing, eating and playing board games with my husband’s side of the family. I’d take one big Tupperware™ container-full of Nuts-n-Bolts up north to the farm, too, because my husband’s family loved it, as well! I still bring it every year!

Freezer Foods for Practicing Hospitality

I freeze the rest of the quadruple batch in Tupperware containers. When our kids were growing up, I’d have it on hand for our annual big skating party. Living on a lake, my guys would flood and make a HUGE ice-skating rink, and for many years we hosted an annual event for families (usually about 30-35 people attended)–a Skating Party, with a potluck supper and Sharing Time following. We’d sing Christmas hymns and go around and share what God had been doing in our lives in the last year. We ended with a prayer time. Sharing and prayer together is so powerful. Emotional. Meaningful. Good for your kids to see, and be a part of.

Now that our kids are grown, we host an annual Couples’ Christmas Dinner, with just the parents of these same families, no skating, none of our kids or grandkids, but all of the other elements still there.

Everyone brings a main dish and a salad or dessert. I love to set a beautiful table. We serve snacks, including this one, my favorite Thanksgiving snack recipe.

This Thanksgiving Snack Recipe is Adaptable

Changing every recipe I find, just a little, is my habit! I guess I like to be creative that way! Please feel free to experiment with what your family likes best, too! In this Thanksgiving Snack recipe, I like to use Wheat Chex and Bran Chex, as well as Rice and Corn Chex, giving it a little more fiber and “health”–but I also put a whole can of mixed nuts and a whole can of cashews into the quadruple batch for “good taste”!

You only have Thanksgiving and Christmas once a year, you know!

Here is the Original 1950’s Recipe (right off of a 1950’s cereal box), and below that you’ll find the recipe that I use.

Chex Party Mix (The Original 1950’s Recipe)

Serves:  Makes 1 Batch

  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1-1/4 tsp seasoned salt
  • 1/4 tsp garlic salt
  • 3 cups Wheat Chex square cereal
  • 2 cups Rice Chex square cereal
  • 1-1/2 cups peanuts
  • 1-1/2 cups small pretzel rods

Prep Time: 5 minutesCook Time: 40 minutes

I use 2 roasting pans like the one below and having the right tools makes this so easy! A roaster pan is a must-have for every kitchen. Mine has lasted and been used extensively for years! I use it for turkey, of course, but much more. Even though I don’t host Thanksgiving, I like to make a turkey once a year. I also buy organic chickens from a local family and they are sometimes 8 lbs. each. I love roasting them with potatoes and carrots in the oven, using our home-grown herbs to season–delicious! And, I use them both for this recipe every year!

Preparation:

  • Preheat oven to 275 degrees F.
  • Melt butter in a shallow pan.
  • Stir in Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, and garlic salt (not garlic powder).
  • Add Wheat Chex, Rice Chex, nuts (peanuts, pecans or cashews), and pretzel rods.
  • Mix until all pieces are coated with the butter mixture.
  • Place on a shallow baking pan with sides. Bake for 40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. Cool…enjoy!

Old Photo of (Part of!) The Finished Quadruple Batch

“Nuts-and-Bolts” (Chex Party Mix, My Version)

Makes a Quadruple Batch = About 50 cups (approx. 2 Large Tupperware-Containers-full)

It’s easy to halve this or just make 1 batch–Try it!

  • 12 cups Corn Chex cereal (one 14 oz box)
  • 12 cups Rice Chex cereal (one 12.8 oz box)
  • 12 cups Wheat Chex cereal (almost 2-14oz boxes)
  • (I substitute Bran Chex for part of the Corn and Rice Chex)
  • *1 can Mixed Nuts
  • *1 can Cashews
  • 4 cups pretzel sticks (less than one bag)
  • *4 sticks of butter (you can get by with 3, which is 24 Tbsp:)
  • 8 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 6 tsp Lawry’s Seasoned Salt
  • 3 tsp garlic salt (or garlic powder)
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • *you can use 3 sticks of butter and less nuts for a lower fat version

Preparation:

  • Preheat oven to 275 degrees F.
  • In 2 large oval roaster pans, melt the butter (half in each)
  • While the butter’s melting, mix your dry ingredients in two large Tupperware or other plastic bowls
  • Check your butter–you just want it melted.
  • Add half of the Worcestershire sauce (4 Tbsp) to each pan of melted butter. Stir.
  • Add half of the other seasonings to each pan, and stir well
  • Now SLOWLY add the dry cereal mixture, a large stainless steel spoon works best, so you can scrape the bottom of the pan, stirring after every little bit, to thoroughly coat it with the butter mixture, but not crush the cereal.  (If your butter mixture has had time to cool, put it back in the oven to heat it a little for easy pouring and coating consistency.  Otherwise it will glop onto some of the cereal, and not coat some, and you’ll have burnt pieces, which makes it all taste yucky.)
  • Now, put the pans in the oven at 275 degrees and bake for an hour, taking it out and stirring every 15 minutes, so it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan and burn.  If you’re using roaster pans, you can put the cover on and holding both handles tightly, shake it up and down and around, to mix.  You’ll still have to stir a little with a spoon to scrape the bottom.
  • After an hour of baking, spread the mix out on paper towels or paper bags cut open and turned inside out, to cool.  When cool, store in airtight containers in the freezer for up to a month.  Enjoy your new tradition from Our House to Yours!

Establishing traditions through special foods is a timeless practice. I hope your family will enjoy this Thanksgiving Snack Recipe that is an easy recipe to make ahead, use in many ways, and help you be more organized to bless your family and friends this holiday season!
